ETNO and GSMA held a joint seminar on the EU Data Protection reform, opened by Lara Comi, MEP, Rapporteur from the European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection.


The event brought together the European Data Protection Supervisor, Peter Hustinx and MEP Lara Comi, Rapporteur from the European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO). Representatives from the European Commission and the privacy and civil rights organisation European Digital Rights also attended.

The need for a consistent data protection framework is needed for both industry and consumers and the importance of addressing discrepancies between the proposed Data Protection Regulation and the 2002 ePrivacy Directive, were the main topics for discussion. Panelists included: Lara Comi, MEP; Peter Hustinx, EDPS; Giuseppe Abbamonte & Rosa Barcelo, DG CONNECT; Joe McNamee, EDRi; Lars Kindervater, GSMA Europe. Cristina Vela, ETNO Data Protection Working Group Chair, shared the views of telecoms operators.
